With that being said, there are some genuinely unnerving scenes in the movie, but it has it's focus on the characters themselves, where the focus should be, In similarity to The Babadook, where the focus is on the distressed mother and her troubled son.
As for Pennywise, it's hard to compare Curry and Skarsgaard, as they depict two wildly different variants of the infamous clown. Curry was the creepy child molester (keep in mind he based it on a serial killer) type and Skarsgaard is just plain frightening.
The kids are easily the part in this movie they show drama, comedy, and some heart warming moments. Capturing a similar style to classic 80s adventure that we hold dear, that being this isn't a stranger things rip off, Stranger Things came in 2016, the It book came in 1986. br> The movie has great cinematography and a good flow line of time, as well as great dialogue and acting. Without the aid of the original miniseries, and/or the novel, there is no reason to care about any of these characters, and no way to even understand what the film is even about. There's virtually no story to any part of this move.
And the CGI, seriously. Wow. I can generally look past obvious CGI effects in other films. But this isn't your normal "obvious CGI" this is really really really BAD "obvious CGI.
Aside from the parts in the preview, there is not one scene of pennywise that isn't laughably executed. From the first encounter with Georgie, to the ridiculous dances, to the awful ending. This film has ruined an iconic horror movie antagonist, and the worst part about it, is that they're going to make another one.
I'm not sure exactly what went wrong, or where they went wrong, because every single aspect (aside from the acting of the main 7) is just wrong.
To say I'm disappointed would be a vast understatement.
The PR team however, deserves commending for keeping the rating well above what it deserves. Forget horror movie, this is just a bad bad bad bad bad movie.
Save your money, safe your time, save yourself from enduring this forgettable train wreck of a film.
